Volunteers in Villages Project: Greens Norton

South Northants Volunteer Bureau has been fortunate in having the help of a volunteer in promoting the work of the bureau within Greens Norton, as one of our Volunteers in Villages.

We now need a new volunteer to continue the project work. The main aim of the project is to maintain and increase the number of volunteers within the village and support voluntary activity, so helping to sustain a thriving and dynamic community village life.

A second aim of the project is to research and improve consultation exercises with local people undertaken by local authorities. Local authorities and primary care trusts are now required to consult with local people under best practice rules. Our volunteer acts as a go between, using dedicated web pages on the internet, ensuring that consultation questions reach appropriate people or organisations within the village community and good responses are returned to the authorities.

The volunteer would be someone who can develop the role in the community; becoming known to village people as a focal point for voluntary groups and volunteering within the village. The type of person who might be interested in this voluntary job would be someone who enjoys meeting people and who is enthusiastic about the life of their local community.

The person may or may not have familiarity with computers and the internet, as help in this area will be given. Different people having different skills or interests, working together, might well undertake different parts of the volunteering job, so developing a team approach within a larger village such as Greens Norton

And finally. We have volunteers in nine villages across the district. The project presently has a three year duration and is at a particularly interesting stage, as consultation processes are under way.

It is a new and innovative pilot project, supported by the Home Office Active Communities Unit and researched by University College, Northampton. As such, it has the potential to develop in different ways in different villages, according to village need and the enthusiasms of the volunteer. The work and time commitment of the volunteer need not be great and could often be completed within the normal course of activities in and around the village.

We are keen to continue and improve our link with Greens Norton and would be very pleased to hear from anyone interested in becoming involved.
